Mark Talamini and Santiago Horgan at UC San Diego announced today that they have successfully performed the first NOTES appendectomy in the United States. Although details are still forthcoming, the press release notes that the team used USGI Medical’s EndoSurgical system. The patient was quoted as saying, “A day after surgery, I have a little pain, a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10.”

    Most of my lap appy’s have 1-2 pain on a scale of ten on post-op day #1. So what’s the benefit? You’re telling me we need to train the thousands of surgeons in America to learn a new technique that is more expensive, has a higher learning curve, just for the chance to avoid two 5mm and one 10mm incision? The whole thing is absurd.
